Description
Large antique French ormolu mounted porcelain vase
French, Late 19th century
Height 138cm, width 59cm, depth 46cm
This exceptional 19th-century porcelain vase, in a rare white colourway, exudes opulence. It rests on an ornate ormolu base adorned with sculpted drapery, floral motifs, and a fleur-de-lis crest—hallmarks of its French origin. The vase itself is lavishly embellished with gold gilt fleur-de-lis patterns.
Two finely crafted ormolu handles, each topped with a seated cherub, frame its impressive form. The lid features an intricately detailed finial of intertwined doves in a floral nest, symbolising love and unity.
Hand-painted mythological scenes further enhance its beauty. One side portrays Venus and Mars, the gods of love and war, in a celestial tableau where Venus disarms Mars, echoing the timeless theme of love conquering conflict—famously depicted in Botticelli’s Venus and Mars at London’s National Gallery. The reverse illustrates Perseus rescuing Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus, a tale of heroism and devotion. The Venus side is signed ‘B. Fuchs’.
With its masterful artistry and romantic symbolism, this vase is a captivating statement piece for any refined interior. -
