Description
Pair of antique French opaline glass caskets
French, Early 20th Century
Height 8cm, width 15cm, depth 10cm
These two elegant caskets are made of vibrant blue opaline glass and are cut in a cushion shape, a desirable style for 19th and early 20th century French design.
Opaline glass, made by adding various metal oxides to the mixing process, was particularly popular during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III (1808-1873), and produced a semi-opaque, coloured glass.
The boxes are reflective of the decorative opulence of the Second French Empire. Inspired by Empress Eugenie’s fascination with the court of Marie Antoinette, the period saw the resurgence of Rococo design elements, evident in this piece in the intricate ormolu embellishments that cover its surface. The ormolu forms a protective edge, hinge, flora-inspired base, and decorative frame for the cameos.
Intricately decorated in the style of the Second French Empire, these beautiful boxes would make a wonderful addition to any interior space. -
