Description
Large 19th century American Orientalist painting by Strain
American, 1883
Canvas: Height 65cm, width 56cm
Frame: Height 92cm, width 82cm, depth 8cm
This impressive Orientalist oil painting by American artist Daniel J. Strain (1847–1925) offers a vivid glimpse of daily life in 19th-century Tangiers.
Painted in 1883 and signed lower right, the scene captures a group of figures and camels gathered before an arched gateway, set against the distinctive whitewashed architecture and green-tiled roofs typical of the Moroccan city. A tall minaret rises in the distance, anchoring the composition and enriching the sense of place.
Strain’s use of warm, golden light and a clear blue sky lends the scene an inviting, atmospheric quality. His attention to detail—seen in the relaxed postures of the figures, the varied stances of the camels, and the finely rendered architectural elements—imbues the work with both narrative depth and painterly precision.
Active during the height of the Orientalist movement, Strain was among the American artists who travelled to North Africa in search of new subjects. His paintings from this period reflect both a commitment to architectural accuracy and a romanticised interpretation of Maghrebi life, consistent with broader Western artistic currents of the time.
Presented in a giltwood frame, the canvas is signed, situated and dated lower right 'Daniel Strain, Tangier, 1883'.
This work stands out not only for its size but for its evocative quality. It is a compelling example of Strain’s Orientalist output and would make a distinguished addition to any collection focused on American painting, North African scenes, or 19th-century travel art.
