Description
Pair of antique Louis XVI style green marble and gilt bronze vases
French, Late 19th Century
Height 50cm, width 24cm, depth 18cm
A superb example of late 19th century French decorative art, this fine pair of green marble and gilt bronze vases beautifully reflects the neoclassical elegance of the Louis XVI revival, while subtly incorporating elements of the then-emerging Art Nouveau style.
Resting on shaped, stepped bases with ornate acanthus detailing, the vases are crafted from richly veined green marble - a material prized not only for its durability but also for its captivating natural patterns, which add depth and organic beauty to each piece.
Crowning each baluster-form vase is a domed lid surmounted by a finely detailed gilt bronze finial depicting oak leaves and acorns, symbols traditionally associated with strength. This motif reappears around the base of the handles, creating a thoughtful sense of visual continuity.
Elegant gilt bronze handles with flowing, organic curves adorn the upper portions of the body. Their sinuous form spreads partially across the front and back, subtly referencing the fluid lines that would come to define Art Nouveau design in the decades to follow. The handles terminate in classical acanthus flourishes, enhancing the vases’ ornate character.
Drawing the eye downward from the slender neck to the full-bodied midsection, the design gracefully concludes with a flared socle foot.
The bronze mounts are stamped ‘F. Rambaud. Sc’, indicating the sculptor, and ‘Susse Frères Editeurs Paris’, denoting one of the most esteemed French foundries of the 19th century, known for their finely cast bronze artworks.
Blending superior materials with artistic sophistication, this striking pair offers both historical significance and timeless decorative appeal.
