Art Deco sculptural lamp Les Porteuses D'eau by Pierre Le Faguays

A rare and beautifully documented Art Deco luminaire, "Les Porteuses d'Eau" (The Water Carriers), by the French sculptor Pierre Le Faguays (1892-1935? — active 1920s-30s), edited by the Parisian foundry Etling. This model is illustrated in Victor Arwas's definitive reference Art Deco Sculpture (p. 125), where it is described as patinated bronze, alabaster, and glass tesserae on a marble base.
The composition depicts two elongated classical maidens in flowing, pleated chitons, their heads bowed and inclined toward one another in a gesture of quiet intimacy, jointly raising an alabaster bowl above their shoulders. The bowl's rim is inlaid with a checkerboard band of black glass and gilt tesserae, a decorative device typical of the finest Etling and Le Faguays models of the period. When lit, the alabaster glows with a warm honeyed light, illuminating the veining of the stone. The figures stand on a stepped base of black and gold veined (Portor-style) marble.
The piece is signed "P. LE FAGUAYS" to the marble base.
Pierre Le Faguays was among the most celebrated sculptors of the French Art Deco period, known for elegant, elongated figures cast by leading foundries including Etling, Les Neveux de J. Lehmann, and Ateliers Marcel Guillard. His work is held in major design collections and remains highly sought after among Art Deco specialists.
