Description
This elegant pair of midcentury organic modern book ends were realized by the esteemed company Schmieg & Kotzian in the United States, circa 1950. The book ends were repurposed caobo (tropical mahogany) wood beams extracted from the house of Don Francisco Clavijo, built in Santo Domingo- the capital of the Dominican Republic- between 1509 and 1515. One side of each pair has been sanded and varnished- showcasing the beautiful natural grain of the wood- while the other has been left raw. This craggy organic surface offers a striking material juxtaposition to the finished fronts. This organic modern pair of book ends are as versatile as they are aesthetically pleasing, blending perfectly with any style of interior from classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary. Schmieg & Kotzian was founded in London by two German cabinet makers- Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian- in 1899. The firm relocated to New York City in 1907, maintaining a showroom in Midtown Manhattan that specialized in high end interior goods until the mid-1950s. Retains its original label reading "Made of beams from the house of Don Francisco Clavijo built between 1509 and 1515 in Santo Domingo D.R SCHMIEG & KOTZIAN, INC., New York." They are in excellent vintage condition.
