Massive Horse Sculpture Crafted From 1000 Chrome Coat Hangers for Barneys NY
-
Description
Monumental Horse
Created in 2006 during the rebranding of Barney’s New York under new Saudi ownership, the Monumental Horse stands as a striking example of large-scale contemporary installation. Conceived through a collaboration between Artistic Director Simon Doonan and New York–based artist Terence Gower, each Barney’s flagship location received a unique equine sculpture crafted from heavy-gauge, custom chrome-plated steel coat hangers.
The Dallas installation—comprising 1,000 meticulously shaped hangers—remains the most ambitious and intricate of the series. Positioned for years within the women’s couture department, the sculpture commanded a view over a custom glass-and-bronze spiral staircase designed by artist Jean Paul Philippe. The interplay of industrial material, elegant form, and dramatic placement created an unforgettable encounter, one whose full impact could only be appreciated in person. -
