Description
A beautifully sculpted solid Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá) serving tray, handcrafted in Brazil circa 1960. Carved from a single block of richly figured rosewood, the tray takes the elegant form of a stylized leaf—a hallmark of the organic modernist language that defined Brazilian decorative arts during the 1960s.
The wood displays exceptional natural character, with flowing grain patterns, deep chocolate and reddish-brown tonal variation, and subtle satin luster that highlights the remarkable beauty of old-growth Brazilian rosewood. The gently hand-shaped rim and integrated handle emphasize the craftsmanship while preserving the warmth and authenticity of the material.
Originally designed as a petisqueira—a tray traditionally used for serving hors d'oeuvres, nuts, olives, or small appetizers—it is equally compelling today as a sculptural centerpiece or decorative object. Its fluid silhouette and expressive grain make it a refined example of mid-century Brazilian craftsmanship, balancing functional design with timeless organic form.
Representative of the celebrated Brazilian design movement of the 1960s, this piece embodies the era's appreciation for noble native hardwoods, sculptural simplicity, and meticulous hand-finishing. With its unknown maker and enduring aesthetic, it remains an elegant collectible that seamlessly complements both modern and classic interiors.
