Description
An exceptional and monumental Emilia Castillo silver-plated serving bowl with genuine malachite inlay, handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico, and hand-signed by one of Mexico's most celebrated contemporary silversmiths. This impressive extra-large centerpiece masterfully combines the brilliance of hammered silver plate with a richly colored crushed malachite border, creating a striking balance of organic texture and refined modernism.
The broad oval form features a deeply hand-hammered basin framed by an intricately textured repoussé-style border, finished with individually set malachite mosaic inlay. Measuring an impressive 24 inches wide, this substantial bowl functions equally well as a dramatic dining table centerpiece, decorative console accent, or collectible example of modern Mexican decorative arts.
The underside retains Emilia Castillo's original hallmark:
"Emilia Castillo – Mexico M.R. – Plateado – TO-85"
and is additionally hand signed by Emilia Castillo, confirming its authenticity.
Emilia Castillo is among the most influential figures in modern Mexican silversmithing. Daughter of Antonio Castillo, co-founder of the legendary Los Castillo workshop in Taxco, she inherited one of Mexico's most important silver making traditions while forging a distinctly contemporary artistic vision. Rather than simply continuing traditional Taxco production, Emilia introduced sculptural forms, vibrant semi-precious stone inlays, exotic woods, and organic motifs that transformed decorative silver into collectible functional art. Her work bridges mid-century Mexican modernism with contemporary luxury design, earning international recognition among collectors, interior designers, and museums alike.
Today, Emilia Castillo pieces are highly sought after for their exceptional craftsmanship, limited production, and unmistakable aesthetic. Large-scale examples such as this are increasingly difficult to acquire and represent the pinnacle of modern Taxco silver design.
Perfect as a serving platter, fruit bowl, centerpiece, or statement decorative object, this piece embodies the artistry that has made Taxco the world's most celebrated center for Mexican silver craftsmanship.
