Description
This set of six champagne glasses, designed by Peter Behrens for Benedikt von Poschinger, dating back to 1898, embodies a skillful blend of innovation and aesthetics. Each glass features a domed bowl of transparent glass mounted on a long stem of optically blown glass, with varying thickness. The optical pattern, achieved by the glassblower pressing the glass mass into a mold with vertical slats, imparts a unique depth to these pieces. The fluid lines, graceful curves of the glasses, and subtle use of color on the stems perfectly illustrate the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The six glasses are in perfect condition.
Known as the father of modern industrial design, architect, designer, graphic artist, and typographer, Peter Behrens (1868-1940) is one of the most influential German designers of the 20th century. A founding member of the Munich Secession, he is also the co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen), which paved the way for the Bauhaus movement. His iconic works include the AEG turbine factory in Berlin, the Borsig power plant in Berlin, and the German pavilion for the 1902 Turin Exhibition. -
