Description
Tapio Wirkkala serving dish in silver with wooden handles, made in the 1950s. This piece displays one of Wirkkala's many beautiful designs almost resembling a seashell. The bottom of the dish is marked "26.2.1958", indicating the date of origin.
Tapio Wirkkala became a super star in the design world due to his huge success in the Milan Triennale's in the 1950s. Rarely does a designer command such an expansive talent and career as Wirkkala did. Inspired by nature and armed with exceptional understanding of geomety and ratios, his designs literally shaped much of our daily lives.
Designs ranging from daily items such as money, jewellery, cutlery, working tools, furniture, logos, etc. to purely artistic creations.
You name it, he designed it!
He tackled and mastered all workable materials like marble and stone as a sculptor to wood, fabric, glass, ceramics, metals and plastic. He did it all and can deservingly be named the da Vinci of Finnish design. -
