Pair of Brown Yrjö Kukkapuro Moderno Bar Stools, Finland 1960s

A pair of gorgeously patinated bar / high stools designed for bars or high counter and kitchen tables as well as homes. These specific ones were definitely used in a bar or a public space as the foot has four holes for screws to fix them to the floor plus the seats have a swing mechanism that will return them to the right position facing the bar, every time they are moved. The legs have a gorgeous patina that can only come with age and use. The combination of oxidation and rust dots on the surface is stunning. The chairs also retain their original upholstery which is intact and has wear consistent with age and use with a couple of rough spots and small holes on the seats. Please see photos.

Born in Vyborg in 1933, Yrjö Kukkapuro has ascended to the pinnacle of international design. Discovered as a young talent during his studies at the Art Institute, Kukkapuro's career spans over 60 years, during which he has designed numerous chairs, many of which are featured in museum collections worldwide. Notable classics still in production include the Ateljee, Remmi, and Moderno series, as well as the iconic Karuselli lounge chair, which began its global journey in 1964. Kukkapuro is also renowned for his office and auditorium chairs, with tens of thousands sold globally.

Kukkapuro's design philosophy revolves around the three E's: ergonomics, aesthetics, and ecology, with sustainable quality at its core. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate and received prestigious accolades such as the Valti Award, the Kaj Franck Design Award, and the Lunning Prize. Sadly Yrjö Kukkapuro died on the 8th of February 2025. According to his daughter he worked all the way up to the end.
