Description
A super fine Japanese summer unlined (Hitoe) Kimono made with a soft Asa fiber blended with silk. The garment was hand-stitched and dated to circa 1930-50s Showa period. It is hard to identify the exact type of fibers used, possibly a fine linen or hemp, but the very smooth soft touch indicates the certain content of silk. The garment, woven in weft ikat, is gauze like, showcasing a beautiful design of the summer floral display. Morning glories, Japonica Kerrias and Wisterias are set among large foliage in a deep enamel green color. The palette, subdued with shades on the dark side gives a sense of shaded coolness.
The quality of this kimono is superb, from the material to the construction. It is a clear a luxury item instead of a daily wear. Very well preserved with only occasional strayed threads.
It measures 50"w x 60"h, as displayed in the first picture.
Provenance: From the Personal Collection of Dr. Robert Jacobsen (1944-2021). The Curator of Asian Art in Minneapolis Insitute of Art from (1976-2010). -
