Ricardo Maya Contemporary Mexican Folk Art Día de los Muertos Painting

$ 2,450
  • Description
    A vibrant and highly symbolic contemporary Mexican folk art painting by Nicaraguan artist Ricardo Maya, celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and the rich cultural traditions of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, in the heart of the historic Purépecha region.

    Executed in acrylic on board and dated 2025, the composition centers on an elaborately decorated Día de los Muertos calavera, crowned by a traditional Mexican hat and surrounded by brilliant orange cempasúchil (Mexican marigold) flowers, lush tropical foliage, and two extraordinary achoques.

    The inclusion of the achoque gives the work an especially meaningful connection to Pátzcuaro. This remarkable amphibian is endemic to the Lake Pátzcuaro region of Michoacán and has become an important symbol of the area's unique natural heritage. Maya places an achoque on either side of the calavera, presenting the pair almost as spiritual guardians or guides accompanying the figure between the world of the living and the spirit world.

    The imagery brings together several powerful symbols associated with Mexican culture and Día de los Muertos: the calavera or sugar skull, cempasúchil flowers, vivid folkloric ornamentation, and the indigenous natural history of Michoacán. The dense botanical background and saturated palette of emerald green, orange, yellow, pink, violet and blue create a visually immersive composition with exceptional decorative presence.

    Of particular interest to interior designers, decorators and collectors, the painting offers an unusually sophisticated way to introduce Mexican folk art, Latin American contemporary art and colorful figurative art into an interior. Its relatively compact scale makes it especially versatile for a gallery wall, library, study, entryway, bar, powder room, eclectic living room or layered maximalist interior. The black frame provides a strong architectural border while allowing the intense colors of the painting to remain the focus.

    The work is signed “Ricardo Maya” at the lower left and dated November 2025 on the reverse. Presented in its black frame and ready for display.

    A compelling contemporary interpretation of Mexican Día de los Muertos iconography, distinguished by the rare depiction of the Pátzcuaro achoque and its connection to the cultural and ecological identity of Michoacán.
