Description
Aboriginal contemporary painting by Emily Pwerle (born circa 1922) entitled "Awelye Atnwengerrp". The work is acrylic on Linen painted in 2022.
One of the dreaming of Emily Pwerle, Awelye Atnwengerrp represents the ochre designs painted on the top half of women’s bodies and the dancing tracks made in the sand during the ceremonies, and also the sacred places where the ceremonies take place. The artist reinterprets the forms and movements with gestural abstraction in vivid colors. The dense composition and intense color palette reflect the artist's "in-trance" state of mind during the creation.
Provenance: Mimi Art Gallery 2022. Stamped and labeled on the back. The painting is accompanied with a gallery COA.
Artist's Biography:
Born around 1922 in the remote Utopia station community, a thriving artist community in the desert 350km northeast of Alice Spring. Birthplace of many important Indigenous artists including Emily Kame Kngwarreye, one of the most acclaimed aboriginal artists from Australia, Utopia is also home of Minnie, Emily, Molly and Galya Pwerle collectively known as "The Four Pwerle Sisters". Emily Pwerle is the younger sister of Minnie Pwerle, the aunt of acclaimed artist Barbara Weir, Minnie Pwerle's daughter, who was raised for several years by Minnie's sister-in-law, Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Like her sister Minnie Pwerle, Emily's paintings depict traditional women's ceremonies known as "Awelye Atnwengerrp" which is broadly translated as women's dreaming. Although all four sisters share the same Dreaming, each one has their own unique interpretation of the Dreaming.
Emily's paintings are held in collections and galleries around the world. -
