This tranquil scene by British artist Joseph Francis Walker (1831–1906) showcases his renowned talent for equine painting. Though best known for dynamic depictions of 19th-century horse sport, Walker also excelled in more reflective rural subjects.

In this painting a grey mare stands in profile beside her foal in an open field. The mare’s coat is rendered with lifelike softness, demonstrating Walker’s deep understanding of equine anatomy. The foal’s gentle gaze draws the viewer towards a distant farmhouse, nestled in trees and hedgerows.
