Mario Carreño "Serenade" Oil Painting on Canvas, Cuba 1941, Signed
Offered for sale is an important oil on canvas painting by Cuban artist Mario Carreño (1913-1999) signed and dated 1941. This painting depicts a serenade with two nude figures in a jungle-like setting. This is the most desirable period of work from this Cuban master of "la primera vanguardia".
Mario Carreño y Morales was a Cuban who studied painting at the Academia de San Alejandro, Havana, Cuba from 1925 until 1926. In 1934, he studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid, Spain. He achieved worldwide notoriety and his works are highly collected. In 1957 he moved to Chili where he worked and remained until his passing. -

Documentation: Signed Origin: Cuba Period: 1920-1949 Materials: Canvas,Carved,Gilt,Hand-Painted Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. It appears that this canvas has been relined at some point. There is a great deal of craquelure present on the painting surface. Styles / Movements: Modernism Incollect Reference #: 715578 -
