Portrait of a Cow at a Trough
American School, unsigned, ca. mid-19th c. Oil on canvas, in a period lemon-gilt frame.
21″ x 17″ (canvas), 26 ¼” x 21 ¾” with frame. Over-all in fine condition, recently cleaned.
Provenance: From the Schutte Collection.
This charming and whimsical folk portrait of a cow was most likely painted by a self-taught artist from New England or New York state.
