This exquisite painting is based on the famous 17th-Century work, ‘Marina del Porto’ by Salvator Rosa. This beautiful version was created in the 18th Century.
The scene depicts the sea with a port in the foreground. The sea—which extends out into the right distance—is lined by mountains, and a picturesque Italianate building occupies the left middle-ground. A team of builders construct a sailing ship propped up on the land, while other ships are moored in the port. On an outcrop of land on the right, groups of figures are pictured stripping off their clothes to swim. This busy scene is flooded with natural golden light, created by the low sun.
This picture has been masterfully painted by the artist. They have employed short, well-blended strokes of colour to naturalistically render the scene, as Rosa himself did. The painting is displayed in a giltwood frame. It is a superb artwork, which will add colour and beauty to the interior in which it is placed.
