This captivating watercolour is by Carl Haag (1820–1915), the esteemed German painter renowned for his delicate and detailed works. Beginning his artistic journey with oil portraits and architectural scenes, Haag shifted his focus to watercolour after settling in England in 1847. His travels through the Middle East between 1858 and 1860 inspired a rich collection of sketches, many of which he transformed into finished pieces upon returning to London. This compelling portrait might be one such example.
Depicted in traditional Middle Eastern dress, the male figure stands serenely, absorbed in contemplation. His eyes are fixed on a distant point, conveying a sense of reverence or wonder. In his right hand, he holds a vividly green hookah that contrasts strikingly with his voluminous white beard. Haag’s exceptional skill in portraiture is evident in the precise anatomy and the subtle expression captured in the man’s face. The muted palette imbues the painting with a peaceful ambiance, while carefully placed touches of colour provide visual interest and depth.
The work is titled ‘Mashallah’, an Arabic phrase meaning ‘God has willed it’, commonly used to express admiration or gratitude. This suggests the subject may have been a person of importance, possibly the original commissioner of the painting.
The watercolour is presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame and bears Haag’s name. The artwork is signed and dated ‘Carl Haag / 1870’ in the lower right corner. On the reverse, an artist’s label reads ‘Mash: Allah! / by Carl Haag’, alongside a retailer’s sticker.
A stunning example of 19th century Orientalist art, this painting is a prized acquisition for collectors seeking exceptional quality.
