Sidney Gross "Untitled (Abstract Composition)"
-
Description
This dynamic and visually compelling abstract expressionist work was painted by the esteemed 20th century artist, Sidney Gross, in 1959. The composition offers a bramble of slashes in black paint- evoking the action paintings of Franz Kline- against a background of classically Mid Century colors- mustards, mossy greens, dove grays, mauves. There are moments of dripping paint that appear fresh and lively, as if they're still in the process of drying decades after its creation, and brushstrokes brimming with verve and energy. With its surprising palate and dynamic composition, this painting embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of first rate abstract expressionist works absolutely adore. It would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century to contemporary.
Born in New York in 1921, Sidney Gross was educated at the highly esteemed Art Students League of New York, and later thought there. He was also a professor at the University of Maryland and Columbia University. Gross' work was featured in 15 one-man exhibitions at the Frank Rehn Gallery in New York City, and included in group shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Albright Knox Gallery, among many other institutions. Sidney Gross was the recipient of the Tiffany Fellowship in 1949, and the winner of the Hallmark Art award in 1958. His work is included in the permanent collections of many celebrated institutions throughout the United States including The Smithsonian Institute of Art, The Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The work is signed and dated "Gross '59" and is in excellent condition. It comes presented in a custom walnut frame with brass trim.
