Description
A playful yet highly architectural double bed from the celebrated Abakus series designed by Eero Aarnio for Asko. Introduced in 1971, the design perfectly captures the optimism and bold geometrical language of early 1970s Finnish design.
Characterized by its softly rounded corners and distinctive "abacus" rail composed of graduated wooden spheres, the bed balances sculptural expression with minimalist restraint, creating a piece that is equally suited to contemporary interiors and important postmodern collections.
Beyond its striking appearance, the bed was designed with practicality in mind. It can be dismantled with ease, allowing for straightforward transportation and installation. Constructed in birch, the model was originally offered in a selection of painted finishes, including white, black, yellow, lime green, and orange.
According to the Asko archives, the Abakus bed (model no. 33030) was approved for production on December 31, 1970. The first production run of 100 examples was completed on March 29, 1971, and the model was introduced to the market in June of that year. In 1974, Asko added a central tubular support leg beneath the bed base to increase rigidity. Beds produced before this modification are therefore among the earliest examples of the model like this example.
The bed retains its original white finish, although portions have been overpainted by a previous owner, seemingly to address areas of paint loss and wear. The repainting is visible upon inspection and has been reflected in the asking price. The bed is structurally sound
An iconic and increasingly scarce piece of Finnish design history, the Abacus bed embodies Eero Aarnio's ability to transform everyday furniture into playful sculptural objects without compromising functionality.
Easily dismantled for transport.
Eero Aarnio (born 1932) is one of Finland's most internationally celebrated designers and a pioneering figure of modern furniture design. Best known for his groundbreaking fiberglass creations of the 1960s—including the Ball Chair, Bubble Chair, and Pastil Chair—Aarnio challenged conventional furniture design through bold forms, innovative materials, and a playful approach to everyday objects. While his futuristic plastic designs earned worldwide recognition, his work for Finnish manufacturer Asko demonstrates the same inventive spirit translated into warm, functional wooden furniture. Today, Aarnio's designs are represented in major museum collections around the world and remain enduring icons of twentieth-century design. -
