Swedish Modern Leather and Brass Floor Lamp by ASEA, Sweden 1950s

$ 4,703
  • Description
    ASEA produced models are pieces of Swedish lighting history. The historic company has had a decisive impact on how the Swedish electro-technical industry has developed, but also on design history. Some models, like this lamp, are preserved in museums, and their technical prowess can be also observed in ASEA’s pieces.

    This innovative mid-century floor lamp seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's design ethos. Crafted with precision and aesthetic finesse, this lamp is a testament to Swedish ingenuity. The lamp's foundation is made up of a robust brass base, ensuring stability and durability. The combination of brass, leather, and fabric create a harmonious contrast, epitomizing the 20th century design principles that sought to marry functionality with form, as well as elegance. The most peculiar element of the design is the so-called goose-neck that holds the fabric shade. A goose-neck is a semi-rigid, flexible joining element made from a coiled metal hose. It can be bent in almost any direction and remain in that position; in this case, this innovative element allows the light to be focused in any direction. The flexibility of the neck adds a touch of practicality to the lamp's overall aesthetic, making it a versatile piece. Next to the undeniable focus on functionality, the aesthetic dimension was considered, most evident in the fabric shade and the brass elements. The perforated pattern runs around the top of the shade, and when the lamp is lit creates a subtle light that is evenly distributed through the small animal cut-outs. The juxtaposition of the traditionally-shaped shade against the modern body is a stroke of design genius. The shade, with its traditional and historic appeal, evokes a sense of nostalgia, harking back to a previous era. In contrast, the sleek and contemporary body propels the lamp into the modern age, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. This duality in design speaks to the evolution of Swedish lighting aesthetics during the mid-century period, where designers were not afraid to experiment with new materials while paying homage to traditional craftsmanship.

    The lamp seamlessly bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, encapsulating the spirit of an era that embraced both heritage and progress in the pursuit of timeless design.
