Description
Bertil Brisborg, the leading designer for Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1940s, played an important role in the development of Swedish lighting, creating pieces that combined architectural clarity with a careful use of materials. Nordiska Kompaniet itself was a major force in Swedish design, producing fixtures for both domestic interiors and public interiors, to help define the visual language of the period.
This floor lamp came as a result of the collaboration between the iconic designer and manufacturer. This model is defined by its elegant composition and the interplay between its slender structure and expressive shade. The base and stem are made of brass, forming a thin vertical line that rises with before gently curving outward at the top. This arc introduces a sense of movement, guiding the eye toward the wide, woven shade. This shade is the most distinctive element, crafted from natural materials in a broad, conical form that diffuses the light. Its texture contrasts sharply with the smooth, reflective surface of the brass, creating a balance between mediums. The woven material allows light to pass through, producing a warm and atmospheric glow. The proportions of this piece are carefully thought-out, with the wide diameter of the shade offset by the thinness of the stem, resulting in a composition that feels both stable and visually light.
During the 40s, designers increasingly explored the contrast between industrial materials like brass and more tactile, natural components, resulting in pieces that feel both modern and approachable. This lamp encompasses this ethos, with its enduring appeal and functionality.
