1950s Mid-Century German Hala Zeeland Model 110 White & Polished Aluminum Lamp

$ 2,100
  • Description
    This is an authentic mid-century modern industrial desk lamp, Model 110 "Schwanenhals" (Gooseneck), manufactured by the Hannoversche Lampenfabrik (Hala Zeeland) in Hannover, Germany, circa 1950s. The design features a heavy cast-iron disk base plate that curves into a fixed-arc tubular steel gooseneck arm, both retaining their factory-original white enamel finish. The column terminates in a highly sought-after, factory-original spun aluminum teardrop shade left unpainted and brought to a polished metallic sheen. The lamp retains its double-stamped brass "HALA / HALA" rotary switch bezel mounted directly into the upper crown of the aluminum reflector.

    Design History & Context
    The post-war portfolio of the German firm Hala Zeeland illustrates the evolution of early functionalism into the softer, more organic lines of Mid-Century Modernism. Operating in the same West German industrial design hub as Gebr. Kaiser & Co., Hala Zeeland engineered the Model 110 to serve as a streamlined task light for corporate offices and architectural studios.

    Moving completely away from the rigid pre-war forms of the 1930s, this 1950s design introduces a sculptural, biomorphic silhouette through its fluidly arched stem and teardrop-shaped reflector. By leaving the spun aluminum shade bare and polished rather than masking it in colored enamels, the manufacturer emphasized the raw, space-age machine materials preferred by post-war European designers. This specific combination of architectural white lacquered iron and bare polished aluminum bridges the critical transition from strict industrial utility to high-end residential modernism.

    Condition Report
    Overall Status: Excellent vintage condition. The lamp maintains superb structural balance, holds its fixed-arc posture perfectly, and is undergoing a technical safety rewire with a premium black European-style cloth tube cord to preserve its original electrical switch assembly.

    Paint & Metalwork: The factory-original white enamel finish on the base and arm is exceptionally well-preserved, displaying minor micro-chipping and light edge wear around the lower base knuckle joint consistent with age. The unpainted spun-aluminum teardrop shade has been detailed and bench-polished, showing a smooth, uniform metallic patina entirely free of structural dents, deep surface scoring, or fractures.Electrical Substructures: The original internal ceramic screw terminal block and its native protective cardboard socket lining are entirely intact. The rare brass rotary switch bezel is structurally perfect with deeply legible stamped factory lettering.
