Monumental “Ponte” Arc Floor Lamp by Duccio Trassinelli for Sormani

An iconic and architectural “Ponte” floor lamp designed by Duccio Trassinelli and produced by Sormani in Italy in the early 1970s. Conceived within the experimental framework of Studio ARDITI, this model stands as a landmark of radical Italian lighting design.

The lamp is defined by its monumental dual-arch structure in chrome-plated steel, spanning dramatically across space like a bridge hence the name “Ponte.” The sweeping lines are anchored by sculptural Carrara marble bases, providing both visual contrast and structural stability. Along the arc, three adjustable spherical diffusers composed of black and transparent plexi elements can be positioned freely, allowing the user to modulate both composition and light distribution.

Balancing engineering precision with sculptural ambition, the lamp functions as both a lighting system and a spatial installation. Its scale and flexibility enable it to illuminate large areas while acting as a commanding centerpiece within an interior.

A rare and highly collectible example of 1970s Italian design, with works from this series held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
