Table lamp with glass base and painted aluminum structure, Enrico Furio Dominici

$ 3,500
  • Description
    Designed by Enrico Furio Dominici (1910–1995), this sculptural desk lamp reflects the experimental lighting design that emerged between Europe and Brazil during the mid-to-late twentieth century. Dominici, an Italian-born designer who relocated to Brazil during the Second World War, later established Studio Dominici, where he helped reintroduce European modernist lighting sensibilities to the Brazilian market. By the 1970s his work increasingly explored fluid metal forms and reductive compositions, distilling the lamp to its essential gesture of light, structure, and balance.

    The design is defined by a single, continuous arc of painted aluminum that rises from the base and extends outward in a graceful cantilever. The elongated curve produces a sense of visual lightness while directing illumination precisely downward, emphasizing the lamp’s functional clarity. Its silhouette—both aerodynamic and restrained—reflects the period’s fascination with movement and technological optimism. The understated black finish further accentuates the purity of the form, allowing the curvature of the structure to read as a single uninterrupted line in space.

    Anchoring the composition is a circular glass base, whose transparency introduces a subtle material contrast to the dark metal structure. The base provides visual grounding while maintaining a sense of lightness, allowing the arched arm to appear almost suspended. This interplay between mass and levity—glass stability counterbalancing the dynamic aluminum arm—demonstrates Dominici’s interest in structural equilibrium and sculptural economy.

    Function is seamlessly integrated into the design. The extended arm projects light across a desk surface without obstructing the work area below, embodying the practical intelligence characteristic of modernist task lighting. The lamp has been professionally rewired and now features a braided power cord with a contemporary black adapter, ensuring safe operation while preserving the integrity of the original design.

    A refined example of late twentieth-century modernist lighting, the lamp reflects Dominici’s transatlantic design perspective and his pursuit of structural clarity through minimal form. Works from Studio Dominici remain sought after for their disciplined geometry and thoughtful engineering, making this piece a compelling addition to a serious collection of modern design.
