Description
With its sculptural silhouette and fluid motion, this floor lamp captures the elegant experimentation of Italian lighting design in the early 1970s. Designed by Fabio Lenci, the “Lampione” stands as a clear expression of futuristic optimism balanced by organic form.
Design
Made in Italy around 1971 by Guzzini, this DL5 model is constructed from moulded ABS plastic with a domed opaline diffuser and a slender, trumpet-shaped base. The colour gradient, from a soft white to a warm ivory, subtly enhances the lamp’s natural curvature. Its flexible neck enables directional adjustment of the upper arm, while the weighted base ensures balance and poise. Lenci, known for his innovative use of industrial materials, sought to create lighting that was both functional and sensual. The result here is a piece that calls to mind the gentle arc of a flower stem or the animated geometry of mid-century biomorphism.
This model was part of a small production run and remains relatively rare. Its soft upward sweep and oversized diffuser make it ideal for reading corners or ambient lighting in minimalist interiors. With its futuristic sensibility and warm tactile presence, it bridges the gap between space-age modernism and postwar Italian craftsmanship.
A standout example of Lenci’s design philosophy, the Lampione DL5 unites form and utility with a touch of theatricality.
Condition
The condition is very good, with mild yellowing of the ABS typical of age and original wiring retained. The chrome ring shows some oxidation, visible upon close inspection. From the first owner.
