Description
Gracefully arched like a drawn bow, this sculptural Italian floor lamp from the 1950s–60s embodies the experimental spirit of mid-century design. Refined in silhouette yet striking in presence, it balances functional clarity with the warmth of natural materials.
Design
The lamp is crafted entirely from lacquered black wood, formed into a dramatic arch that rises from a forked, claw-like base. The structure feels both grounded and dynamic, creating a sense of movement that almost defies gravity. At the upper tip, a conical off-white fabric shade hangs from a metal ring, introducing a gentle contrast in both texture and color.
The curved prongs of the base provide stability while mirroring the lamp’s organic flow. Its construction and profile suggest influences from Scandinavian minimalism and Japanese asymmetry, while the materials and scale firmly place it within the Italian post-war design tradition. Light diffuses softly through the fabric shade, producing a warm, inviting glow suited to reading or ambient illumination.
Although the designer remains unknown, the sophistication of the form and the quality of craftsmanship suggest it may have originated from a Northern Italian workshop or architectural studio active in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
Condition
The lamp remains in good original condition, showing light wear consistent with age. The black lacquer finish displays minor surface marks. The lamp has been rewired and is fitted with a new lampshade. -
