Description
This impressive Italian Venetian-style Blackamoor torchiere floor lamp dates to the mid to late 20th century, circa 1940's. Inspired by the elaborate decorative traditions of Venice and the historicist revival of Baroque and Rococo ornament, this striking sculptural lamp combine figural artistry, richly gilded surfaces, and elaborate candelabra forms to create a dramatic and luxurious decorative statement.
The lamp features a finely modeled standing male figure with a dark, lustrous finish, dressed in a flowing gilt drapery wrapped around the waist. The figure is depicted in a supporting pose, holding aloft an ornate multi-arm candelabrum. The elaborate gilt-wood light fittings feature gracefully curved arms, scrolling foliage, decorative finials, and candle-style electric lights. The contrast between the deep, dark finish of the figure and the warm golden tones of the drapery and ornamentation emphasizes the sculptural details and contributes to the torchiere theatrical presence.
The figure stand upon elaborate gilt-wood base, richly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, foliate motifs, volutes, and sculptural feet. The deeply modeled ornamentation and luminous gold-toned finish reflect the taste for lavish interiors and theatrical decorative objects associated with Venetian-inspired furnishings of the period. Designed to offer both functional illumination and the presence of freestanding works of decorative art.
Measuring approximately 69 inches high by 15 inches wide and 10 inches deep, this imposing torchiere floor lamp is particularly well suited to a formal living room, grand entrance hall, library, or elegantly appointed traditional interior. The torchiere's considerable height, elaborate candelabra, and richly decorated base make this especially effective flanking a doorway, console, fireplace, or architectural feature.
The lamp is in good working condition, with minor surface wear and small paint chips consistent with age and use. -
