Description
Affectionately known by a few charming nicknames—the "Cow Bell," "Church Bell," "Hat Lamp," or even "Snufkin" after the beloved Tove Jansson character—this iconic Paavo Tynell table lamp is distinguished by its unique and sculptural reflector shade. It stands as one of the most sought-after and rare models from his catalogued series, celebrated for its masterful combination of pierced brass and woven rattan.
This particular example is in good vintage condition. It's rattan has a beautifully and warmly aged patina. The interior of the shade shows minor wear consistent with its age and use, a gentle testament to its history. The lamp is fully stamped with TT, model made in Finland and model number.
Paavo Tynell, the celebrated Finnish designer known as the man who "illuminated Finland," created fixtures for landmarks like the Finnish Parliament House and the United Nations in New York. Beginning his career as a metalsmith, Tynell co-founded Taito Oy and, after WWII, developed his distinctive style aimed at the American market. Sold through Finland House in New York, his designs, including this one, became bestsellers. Though initially critiqued in Finland, Tynell steadfastly pursued his vision, resulting in the creation of these now-iconic works. Today, his masterful lamps are highly coveted by collectors worldwide, with this rare, sculptural table lamp representing a pinnacle of his innovative and timeless design. -
