Description
A beautiful pair of the iconic Paavo Tynell floor lamps, model 9602, also known as the “Chinese Hat.” Originally designed in the 1930s, this model remains one of Tynell’s most celebrated and sought-after creations, exemplifying his refined approach to lighting design.
Each lamp features a round brass base and a slender stem wrapped in rattan, culminating in a brass switch housing. The lamps are fitted with two light sources and topped with elegant wooden slatted shades, which diffuse the light softly and create a warm, atmospheric glow. Both examples are stamped Idman, retain their original components, and display a rich, desirable patina. The shades are of a later date.
Sculptural yet understated, model 9602 integrates effortlessly into a wide range of interiors—from Scandinavian modern and mid-century settings to more eclectic or contemporary spaces. Their warm brass tones and organic materials bring softness and texture, making them equally suited as statement pieces flanking a sofa or as refined accents in reading corners or bedrooms.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer often referred to as the man who “illuminated Finland.” A co-founder of Taito Oy, he played a key role in shaping modern Finnish lighting design. His work, characterized by delicate detailing and a poetic use of light, gained international recognition in the mid-20th century, particularly in the United States. Today, his designs are highly collectible and admired for their timeless elegance and craftsmanship. -
