This large-scale American table lamp dates from the late 1950s and represents the mid-century architectural style known as Streamlined Chinoiserie. Rather than relying on applied surface ornamentation, the design uses structural forms to reference traditional East Asian architecture—specifically replicating the silhouette of a formal temple gate entrance or Torii gateway.

The core composition centers on twin, heavy polished brass column pylons that taper from substantial bases into elongated, elegant necks. Each pylon is punctuated near the upper terminal by a machine-shaped triple array of stacked brass saucer fins featuring a distinctive scalloped, pie-crust edge. This ornamental detailing balances the lamp's strict geometric lines with a refined Chinoiserie motif. Rather than standard cast metal, the twin columns emerge from a substantial, custom-turned solid hardwood plinth base finished in a mirror-slick, high-gloss black lacquer. This substantial wooden core provides an exceptional textural and tonal contrast against the brilliant gold fields of the metalwork. Symmetrically flanking the central cross-arm is a single central socket housing that cleanly diffuses warm ambient illumination downward across the polished contours of the brass columns.

Connecting the two columns at the apex is a solid brass horizontal cross-beam, completing the architectural gate profile. A central vertical riser extends from the cross-beam to house the lighting socket assembly. By reducing a historic architectural monument down to simple brass tubes and a lacquered wood platform, the designers created a minimalist geometric fixture that provides downward ambient light across the polished metal shafts.
