Monumental French 19th Century Louis XVI Gold Gilt Mirror
-
Description
This is a massive French 19th Century mirror from the main hall of the Archbishop Palace Rouen, Normandy, France. This mirror is over 10’ tall and more than 6’ wide. Both the frame and mirror show aging. The original mercury mirror plate has oxidized, creating an undeniable detail in this antique mirror. The lines on this mirror fall where wood support pieces meet on the back of the mirror. We can assume over a period of time, moist air flowing through the spaces behind the mirror caused the mercury to oxidize and flake off the glass.
