Description
Designed by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, rare and exceptional large rectangular wall mirror in rose-pink mirrored crystal glass with intricately wheel-engraved and sandblasted decoration, Italy, 1930s.
This exquisite mirror features a large central rectangular mirror plate surrounded by broad, individually shaped sections of delicately rose-tinted mirrored glass. The frame is distinguished by its graceful scalloped silhouette, gently undulating sides, pronounced corner elements, and subtly raised crests centered along the upper and lower borders. The distinctive rose or pink mirrored glass is a rare color variation of this model, further distinguishing this example from the more commonly seen clear glass versions.
The surrounding glass frame is richly decorated with stylized oak leaves, scrolling foliate motifs, crosshatched lattice panels, and a continuous undulating inner border. The combination of fine wheel engraving and softly frosted sandblasted details creates an elegant contrast against the luminous pale rose-colored mirrored ground. Slender diagonal glass elements define each corner and visually connect the outer frame to the central mirror plate.
Warm amber-toned and patinated metal securing studs punctuate the composition, complementing the subtle pink coloration of the glass and emphasizing the mirror’s carefully articulated construction. The mirror retains its substantial period wooden backing and hanging hardware.
Combining the ornamental character of traditional Venetian mirror making with the disciplined geometry of Italian Art Deco, this rare design exemplifies Pietro Chiesa’s sophisticated approach to decorative glass. The unusual rose-pink coloration, generous proportions, and highly detailed engraved decoration give the mirror an especially refined and distinctive presence. -
