Description
This exceptional first-generation Penguin Chair by Ib Kofod-Larsen is a masterclass in Danish Modern ergonomics and restraint. Designed in the early 1950s, the Penguin Chair is celebrated for its sculptural silhouette and surprisingly comfortable sit—proof that beauty and function can coexist effortlessly.
The chair features its original black iron frame, retaining the lightness and graphic clarity that define early Kofod-Larsen designs. The molded beechwood plywood backrest curves organically to support the body, creating a relaxed and ergonomic seating position that feels as good as it looks. A particularly important detail: the underside of the backrest bears a “Made in Denmark” burn mark, confirming its authenticity.
The seat has been newly upholstered in rich Moss green leather, a thoughtful and period-appropriate update that complements the warm tone of the beech plywood while adding a refined contrast to the blackened metal frame. The leather is supple and comfortable, offering durability without compromising the chair’s original character.
Highly collectible and increasingly difficult to find in this condition, this Penguin Chair represents Ib Kofod-Larsen at his best—elegant, human-centered, and timeless. Equally at home in a living space, office, or design-driven interior, it stands as both a functional chair and a piece of mid-century design history.
As seen in the photos one plastic foot is missing. We are sourcing a new foot. -
