Description
A wonderful and iconic "Aulanko" lounge chair designed by Märta Blomstedt in the 1930s for the Hotel Aulanko in Finland. This chair is from the 1940s and reupholstered in soft & "moonlight" beige colored sheepskin. This chair is a bit lower than usual and has a larger wing span and depth making it extra comfortable and quite curvy making it extra beautiful. This version is also extra cumfy as it has springs in the back rest. A very rare feature in these chairs.
A fun fact, in Finnish this chair is referred to as "Laiskanlinna" which translates to "lazy castle".
Märta Blomstedt (1899-1982) was a prominent Finnish architect and a key figure in the Finnish functionalism movement. Born in Turku, Finland, she studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology and graduated in 1922.
She married fellow architect Pauli E. Blomstedt in 1924, and together they established a successful architectural firm. After Pauli's death in 1935, Märta continued her career, partnering with Matti Lampén to form the firm Blomstedt & Lampén with whom they designed the iconic Aulanko Hotel to which she specifically designed this chair model.
Märta Blomstedt's work is characterized by its functionalist approach, focusing on simplicity, functionality, and integration with the surrounding environment. -
