Description
Mid-Century Modern egg chair, pod chair, on swivel base. Mid Century Swivel Egg Pod Chair made by "The Modern Upholstered Chair Company" (1940-1987) in the late 1950's was an American answer to the modern round chair style coming out of Europe. In 1954 Ico Pari's Egg Chair for Cassina was presented at the Milan Triennale, and in Paris Jean Royer first exhibited his small ‘Oeuf’ chairs at the 1954 Salon des Arts Ménagers. These examples of the egg or pod shape set a new aesthetic in motion for modern chair design. The Modern Upholstered Chair Company was the first American company to produce a version of this style in 1956. This Swivel Egg Pod chair in our listing is The Modern Upholstered Chair Companies chair. Sculpted wood frame, spring bound seat, on solid wooden base with swivel mechanism, now restored with Kravet Boucle covering. Very comfortable in very good condition. American 1956-58
In 1958 Arne Jacobsen designed his "Egg" chair as part of a commission for the SAS Royal Copenhagen Hotel in Denmark, which today is known and trademarked as "The Egg Chair" and also the most notably iconic design associated with the term Egg Chair. -
