Description
Rare Paavo Tynell Desk Lamp by Broderna Malmstroms. This model a variation Paavo Tynell’s model 9212A pictured in Idman catalog 1953/54. The shade used for this model is visible in the photo November 1951 issue of Reader's Digest (Valitut Palat in Finnish). Photo showing workers around a table assembling brass lamps and shades at the Finnish lighting company Taito Oy, led by the renowned designer Paavo Tynell. This desk lamp is one of a pair (a pair is available) collected from the library of an estate with several other Paavo Tynell lighting fixtures ca1949-50. One Tynell chandelier in the center of the dining room was commissioned with a special brass canopy specificity designed to allow airflow from the air supply vent. This desk Lamp is in very good original working condition. Turn switch and wire have been replaced, original finish untouched with scuffs to the rich patina brass as pictured. Restoration polishing of the brass with new white enamel to the interior of the shade fixture is available if desired to achieve like new.
Paavo Tynell’s collaboration with the Swedish manufacturer Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik (based in Malmö) was a significant part of his international reach during the late 1940s into 1950s. Tynell's primary Finnish company, Taito Oy, could not meet the high demand for his intricate brass work across the Nordic region. Bröderna Malmströms was licensed to manufacture his designs for the Swedish market. In the late 1940's Tynell's designs began appearing in Bröderna Malmströms catalogs, example, the iconic perforated brass model 1576 based on a design Tynell originally created in 1948. Early 1950s was the most active period for the partnership. Documentary evidence shows that representatives from Tynell's primary Finnish manufacturer, Idman (which managed his distribution), visited the Malmströms factory in Malmö on May 7, 1951, to oversee production standards. Tynell’s fixtures were formally cataloged by Bröderna Malmströms in their 1951 edition (specifically on page 21). As with several of Paavo Tynells designs many where commissioned based, and earlier cataloged designs of Oy Tatio AB and Idman Oy later appeared modified, enhanced or customized for specific projects and collaborations. This is documented throughout his career relationships with architects and manufactures. -
