The "Original Abstract Series" is one of Sascha Brastoff's most recognized production lines, known for its distinct earthy palette and textured surfaces. This series represents his shift toward mid-century modern minimalism while maintaining his signature hand-decorated flair. Key Aesthetic Features. The "Original Abstract" collection is defined by several consistent design elements: Horizontal Stripe Pattern: Most pieces feature thick, horizontal bands.
Glaze Effects: A signature characteristic of this line is a heavy crazing effect, often referred to as a crackle glaze. Brastoff frequently integrated gold leaf and gold lusters into his bands to elevate the "Original Abstract" series. Specifically, gold was often used as a contrasting third or fourth layer within the horizontal stripe motifs.

Sascha Brastoff (1918–1993) was a prolific mid-century American designer, ceramist, and performer who built a Mid-Century Modern decorative arts empire in Los Angeles. Known for his flamboyant style and versatility, becoming a titan of California studio pottery. In 1947, with backing from Winthrop Rockefeller, he opened a factory in West Los Angeles. His studio produced high-end porcelain dinnerware, vases, and ashtrays characterized by graffito techniques and hand-applied gold accents. Sascha Brastoff’s lamps are among his most high-end and sought-after works, often considered functional sculptures rather than just household lighting. Produced primarily between 1947 and 1963 at his Los Angeles studio, these pieces were a staple of Hollywood "Pottery to the Stars" decor.

His work is part of the permanent collections at the following institutions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY) — This museum holds a significant collection, Brastoff won a top prize at their 1948 Ceramic National exhibition, Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, CT), Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, ME), Georgia Museum of Art (Athens, GA),
Zanesville Museum of Art (Zanesville, OH) — Part of their American Art Pottery
