Amsterdam School Side Table in Oak with Coromandel Inlay, The Netherlands 1930s
-
Description
A fine example of Amsterdam School furniture design, this compact oak side table embodies the decorative yet structured elegance typical of the movement.
Design
Produced in the Netherlands during the 1920s or early 1930s, the table features a round top set with a geometric oak veneer pattern, punctuated at the centre by an inlay of dark coromandel wood. The result is a subdued yet rhythmic composition that reflects the Amsterdam School's architectural influence and preference for layered decoration. The central motif—crafted from quartered segments—recalls the movement’s inclination toward graphic embellishment rooted in craftsmanship rather than ornamentation for its own sake.
Four sculpted legs taper downward and are subtly faceted to mirror the table’s radial geometry. Twin vertical mouldings on each leg lend a sense of vertical tension, while the gently arched lower stretchers form a cross-shape, reinforcing the structure and creating a quiet dialogue between strength and symmetry. The table's proportions are well balanced, lending it a versatility that suits both as a low occasional table or a decorative pedestal. Its modest scale belies the refinement of its detailing.
An object that speaks to the ideals of design reform, where construction and decoration are unified, and modest materials are treated with care and intent.
Condition
This piece is in good condition with light wear consistent with age. The top shows some minor surface marks and a few small scuffs to the edge, but the veneer and inlay remain intact and visually cohesive. -
