Description
19th Century Tibtan Folding Table called a Tepchog. A tepchog is a traditional, low-profile folding table originating from Tibet. This example has a blossoming Lotus flower on the front and sides. Intrictley decroated with raised paint work. The raised paint work was created using kyungbur, a traditional Tibetan relief-gesso decoration technique. Showing it age with a time endored patina of Yak butter, insence sot and wear from use. The artwork strongly suggests this table originated in Eastern Tibet, most likely from the historical regional province of Kham. Dating to about middle 19th century 1850-70 based on the decor and style and materials. Condition is as pictured good with distressed patina. Folding panels work well.
Tepchog is one of the oldest and most distinct forms of Himalayan furniture, born directly out of necessity. This is Tibetan monks traveling folding table. Historically, Tibetans were highly pastoral, nomadic herdsmen who moved frequently across the high-altitude plateau with their livestock. Heavy, rigid furniture was impossible to transport across rugged mountain terrains. The tepchog was engineered to pack flat into leather or animal-hide traveling bags to be slung over a yak or horse. When a traveling family, monk, or lama set up camp, the table would be unpacked to serve two main functions: Portable Altar: It acted as a temporary, sacred Buddhist shrine to support incense burners, text manuscripts, or offering bowls. Daily Living: Because Tibetans sat on the floor, sheepskins, or low woven cushions, these short tables were the perfect height to rest text blocks or a bowl of traditional yak-butter tea. Tepchog Tables of this nature were critical for nomadic monks traveling by yak or horse through the rugged Himalayan terrain. - More Information
