Description
This elegant side table was designed by Carl Malmsten in 1951 and is known as the Båstad model, named after the town where Malmsten's close friend, the iconic textile artist Märta Måås-Fjetterström, was based. The table was crafted by cabinetmaker Erik Johansson in Eskilstuna, Sweden, and is marked with Johansson's name and the initials "CM" on the underside of the top. The craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker, combined with the striking design, make this a perfect example of the elegant work of Carl Malmsten.
The design is characterized by the graceful curves of the three-legged pillar base, made of solid mahogany. The marquetry on the mahogany veneer top features a geometric, multi-angular pattern that radiates from the center of the table. This design is framed by a zigzag border of ribbon mahogany veneer, which contrasts with the surrounding wood grain, creating a refined and distinct "starburst" effect.
The table is in very good original condition with only minimal, minor marks consistent with age and use. -
