Description
This pair of Brazilian modern side tables by Celina, dating to the 1960s, balances sculptural woodwork with the quiet elegance of natural marble. Each table pairs a removable square marble top with a richly figured rosewood frame and an open lower shelf, bringing depth and practical purpose to a compact silhouette.
Four distinctive spindle-shaped legs define each piece. Their elongated, gently swelling profiles recall bowling pins, tapering toward the floor and rising above the marble as rounded corner posts. These projecting tips frame the stone, while the straight wooden aprons and slender lower shelf introduce crisp horizontal lines. The interplay of curved supports and planar surfaces gives the tables a poised architectural presence, with open space keeping the construction visually light.
The rosewood has aged beautifully, developing a rich interplay of warm amber, reddish brown, and deep chocolate tones threaded with dark, expressive grain. Professionally refinished, the wood displays this natural variation beneath a refined satin sheen. The original marble tops have been professionally polished, revealing their creamy white ground and flowing gray veining while retaining the individual character of each slab. Softened stone edges complement the rounded contours of the legs.
The carefully shaped supports, neatly fitted tops, and balanced proportions make this pair a beautiful example of Brazilian mid-century craftsmanship. Equally suited to flanking a sofa or serving beside lounge chairs, the tables offer a generous upper surface for lighting and an accessible lower shelf for books or small sculptural objects. Their appeal rests in the thoughtful construction and enduring relationship between richly aged rosewood and luminous original stone.
One of the tables has the manufacture seal and tax stamp under the lower shelf. -
