Description
Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal Collection is one of the most recognizable forms in furniture design. Colloquially known as the “Tulip”, Saarinen’s mission was to resolve the chaos under furniture of the 1950’s. In a world where brown wood table legs clashed with their legged chair counterparts; his solution was a single “Pedestal”, a uni-leg which met the floor with such grace never before seen in furniture. The revolutionary form gained popularity and the collection grew to include Chairs, Dining Tables, and as shown here; Side Tables.
These Tulip Tables are generously sized at 20” in diameter while maintaining a petite silhouette. Each top features polished Calacatta Marble, known for its rich golden veins and warm hue. Eero Saarinen’s design called for a diminutive bulldozed edge around each marble top which on these tables remains perfectly intact. Each cast aluminum base is painted white, with one base with a slight higher shine than the other. Knoll’s manufacturer mark can be found underneath each of these bases, cast into the aluminum. Each table is in very good condition with minor wear consistent with age and history, there is a slight chip on the bottom rim of one of the bases shown in our photography. Overall these are excellent vintage examples of Eero Saarinen’s famed “Tulip” Pedestal design. Place them on either end of a sofa, in the middle of a living space as coffee tables, or separated paired with lounge chairs; the options are limitless. -
