French Empire Style Mahogany & Leather Desk
-
Description
Dimensions: 29” H x 50 ½” W x 25” D
A French vintage 20th century leather-topped polished mahogany writing desk, designed in the Directoire taste for refined proportions & materials, accented with Neoclassical symbolism. The wide, cognac leather surface is gently worn and outlined in gold tooling of Greek Key pattern around the edge, complemented by a medallion at the center incorporating Greco-Roman urn and anthemion designs. Four, variously sized drawers occupy the case: the upper left drawer uses the key as a pull, the lower right and center drawers retain working locks, and the double-height drawer on the far right can also lock with the shared key. Note that a secret compartment inside the left drawer would have locked at one time but does not share the same key. Four square legs taper elegantly down to the floor ending in brass sabot feet. At home or in an office, this vintage desk will be a pleasure to work from. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax, ready to join your interior.
