Description
A quietly radical piece of Brazilian modernism, this bar cart / side table designed by Geraldo de Barros for Hobjeto in the 1970s reflects the designer’s disciplined approach to form, material, and structure. De Barros—an influential figure in both Brazilian design and the Concrete art movement—was known for reducing objects to their essential geometry, allowing proportion and craftsmanship to carry the visual impact.
Crafted from richly toned Brazilian hardwood, the piece features a sculptural open-frame construction defined by clean architectural planes and softened corners. Two functional tiers provide practical storage, while the integrated rear compartment discreetly cradles bottles, creating a thoughtful balance between utility and composition. The exposed joinery and darkened hardware accents reinforce the cart’s honest, industrial-modern character—hallmarks of Hobjeto’s forward-looking production during Brazil’s modern design peak.
The warm hardwood surface, meticulously refinished to a satin sheen, highlights the natural depth and grain of the material, lending the piece a refined yet understated presence. Equally suited as a bar cart, occasional table, or sculptural side piece, it embodies the intelligent simplicity that defines Brazilian modern design of the period.
A collectible example of Geraldo de Barros’ enduring design philosophy—where clarity of form meets purposeful construction.
Condition: Excellent condition with professional refinishing; minor age-appropriate wear consistent with vintage pieces. -
