Description
This rare side table was made by H. Sundling AB in Tranås, Sweden, in the 1950s. This particular model was numbered 435.
The top is a fine example of Scandinavian intarsia work: a rounded triangular surface inlaid with an abstract composition of organic shapes, each veneered in a different wood. Birch, satinwood, Macassar ebony, teak and burl wood are combined, each chosen for its own grain and tone. One shape is further inlaid with a small mosaic of lighter wood segments, a detail that shows a high level of marquetry skill. A thin band of lighter wood winds between the shapes, tying the whole composition together like a map or abstract landscape. The table stands on three slightly tapered legs in black lacquered beech wood, finished with brass sabots.
The table is in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and use. -
