Description
Osvaldo Borsani for ABV (Arredamenti Borsani Varedo) rare round dining or center table, Model 7969, in original green onyx and carved mahogany, Italy, 1951.
This exceptional table is distinguished by its substantial circular top in richly figured green onyx, displaying remarkable natural veining in tones ranging from deep emerald and olive green to white and warm brown. The translucency and variation of the stone give the surface extraordinary depth, while the restrained circular form allows the onyx itself to remain the principal decorative element.
The top rests on a sculptural dark-stained mahogany base composed of four elegantly carved legs that extend outward from the center. Their fluid, tapering profiles create a striking contrast with the weight and richness of the stone above, giving the table an unexpected visual lightness.
Model 7969 exemplifies an important moment in Borsani's work for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, when the exceptional craftsmanship and luxurious materials associated with the family firm were increasingly combined with cleaner, more modern forms. Here, the richly figured onyx and hand-carved mahogany retain the artisanal refinement of ABV production, while the simplified circular top and sculptural base anticipate the more modern direction Borsani would pursue after founding Tecno in 1953.
Rarely encountered with its original green onyx top, model 7969 is a particularly refined example of Borsani's early postwar work and of the transition between the highly crafted furniture of Arredamenti Borsani Varedo and the modern design vocabulary that would define his later career. -
