Johann Mongels Culverhouse (1825-1895)
Lived/Active: Holland and New York City
Moonlit Evening Market Scene
Signed and dated (l.r.): “J.M. Culverhouse, 1875”

20” x 16”, 25 ¼” x 21 1/4” with frame
Excellent condition, appears to retain the original gilt frame
Known for his landscapes and “candlelight” genre scenes, Culverhouse successfully captured Dutch life of the 17th c. as seen here in the market place scene. Culverhouse exhibited at all the prestigious venues in both Europe and America during the mid-19th c. By 1865, Culverhouse established himself in the American art market while living in New York. His works today are represented in many museums and private collections. -
